I was never actually a fan of PowerPuff Girls – sorry folks. I was a 17-year-old dude when the show premiered. It just wasn’t quite on my radar. However, I am culturally aware enough to know that it’s a really highly regarded cartoon. I recently gone back and looked at some of it. It was clearly very well-written, and beautifully designed. It’s also a rare sort of program that provides a very strong set of role models for girls. So, let’s make it again!
It’s a great show!
So, naturally, rather than celebrate it for what it is, or continue to develop new content… The Cartoon Network has recently announced that they are going to reboot this show.
Even as someone who has no nostalgic link to the show, I’m just not sure how I feel about this. Do we need to reboot such a recent show? We don’t even know what sort of art-style they’re going to use or who is going to be involved in the production!
What does this say about the media landscape? Why are new franchises so few and far between? Why are we so obsessed with re-creating the things that were successful in the past?
What do you think?
